| In 1963, the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company bought a 12,000 acre ranch and partnered with the Prudential Insurance Company on the planning and development of a city in the country. In the late 1960s, early 1970s, the original community of “Westlake”, in Conejo Valley, California, was divided and two-thirds of the community was annexed by Thousand Oaks, which is in Ventura County. In 1981, the remaining third, in Los Angeles County, was incorporated as the City of Westlake Village. Known as an elite and secluded city, Westlake Village is a community surrounding an artificial lake which straddles the counties of Los Angeles and Ventura. It is considered to be one of the more wealthy communities in the greater Los Angeles, CA area. There is confusion as to where Thousand Oaks ends and Westlake Village begins, abetted by overlapping postal codes, streets names, and numbers. So, many of the residents and businesses like to capitalize on the status of Westlake Village by using “Westlake Village” as the city in their mailing addresses. Westlake Village is home to several corporate headquarters such as Dole Food Company, K-Swiss, Homestore.com, and others. Their goal is to provide the highest quality education possible in a personalized environment, and to enable each student to realize their maximum potential as a responsible citizen who will enhance the community and society. Students in the Ventura County side attend classes the Conejo Valley Unified School District.
