Ventura County has 21 K-12 school districts which serves 12 cities and communities. Some districts within a city are designated as “unified, while other communities are served by more than one district, i.e., elementary and high school. A “unified” school district is a district which serves K-12 and adult education students alike. The elementary school districts provide service to K-8 students. Likewise, a high school district will provide service to grades 9-12 and adult education.
The Ventura County Office of Education provides fiscal services to all of the districts as well as educational resources to teachers and schools within Ventura County. The VCOE is responsible for the Court & Community based schools, the Special Education programs, and the Regional Occupational Programs found throughout Ventura County.
All of Ventura County’s twenty-one school districts are committed to providing quality education to all the student population, which at this writing exceeds 145,000. In addition to the K-12 schools, there are three community colleges and a public four-year university.
The districts of Ventura County are: Briggs Elementary, Conejo Valley Unified, Filmore Unified, Hueneme Elementary, Las Virgenes Unified, Mesa Union, Mupu Elementary, Oak Part Unified, Ocean View Elementary, Ojai Unified, Oxnard Elementary, Oxnard Union High, Pleasant Valley Elementary, Rio Elementary, Santa Clara Elementary, Santa Paula Elementary, Santa Paula Union High, Simi Valley Unified, Somis Union Elementary, Ventura Unified, as well as Ventura County Office of Education, and the California Youth Authority.
Las Virgenes Unified School District
The Las Virgenes Unified School District provides education to over 12,100 students including those living in Agoura. The mission of Las Virgenes is “to ensure that all programs are dedicated toward enhancing student achievement, and that each school is a humanistic organization, valuing students emotionally and academically, providing the highest quality education possible in a personalized environment. We aspire to enable each student to realize maximum potential as a responsible citizen who will enhance the community and society.”
In the 1900’s when the community of Oak Park was created, there was no high school, and those students were bussed to schools in the Simi Valley Unified School District some 23 miles away. By the 1970s, residents appealed to the Las Virgenes Unified School District to annex their neighborhood. However, the request was ultimately declined.
Oak Park Unified School District
In 1977, voters in Oak Park approved a measure allowing for the creation of their own school district and a $40 million bond measure financed the new Oak Park High School which opened in 1981. Now, the Oak Park United School District manages seven schools in Oak Park- a neighborhood preschool, 3 elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and one alternative school.
Due to high achievement levels, over 95% of the district's seniors attend college. The coveted California Distinguished Schools designation has been awarded to Brookside, Oak Hills, Red Oak, Medea Creek and Oak Park High School. In addition, Oak Park High, Medea Creek and Oak Hills schools received national honors as Blue Ribbon Schools. In 2008. Oak Park Unified had the highest API (Academic Performance Index) scores in the county.
The Oak Park community is very proud of the School District's offerings and accomplishments. With active participation by parents, and an enthusiastic staff of teachers that are dedicated to bringing excellence to all of their students, Oak Park is an excellent place for education!
Conejo Valley School District
Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, and Newbury Park are all served by the Conejo Valley School District whose mission is to “meet the academic, cultural, social, and individual needs of students in order to prepare them to make a meaningful contribution to a democratic society.” The District has 21 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 3 comprehensive high schools, 2 alternative high schools, and an adult school. The enrollment is well in excess of 21,000 students in grades K-12.
